The controversy began when American musician Swae Lee credited Nigerians instead of South Africans for the rise of Amapiano. South Africans took to his comments, urging him to use their flag instead of Nigeria’s, as they believe Amapiano belongs to them.
In response to the backlash, Swae Lee apologized, clarifying that he never discredited anyone and was simply acknowledging his connection to Amapiano. He acknowledged the history and the original creators of the genre, expressing his admiration and promising to incorporate Amapiano elements into his music.

The popularity of Amapiano soared when Nigerian artist Davido released “Ke Star” featuring Focalist in 2021/2022.
